The ultimate IELTS guide for graph vocabulary

This post is specifically created for task 1 graph language. This resource specifies what language you need in order to describe the patterns and trends in graphs.

Some of the vocabulary is multifaceted and can be repurposed. This depends on the graph type you get.

This resource is more suited for IELTS line graphs, but I have included other instances of language that you can apply to each of the graphs.

The top 10 details about Task 1:

1. Keep your response well structured. Keep the respective data in their separate paragraphs.

2. Split the data into manageable pieces- I recommend numbering parts of the data so that you split them, and this also helps in how you will order your response.

3. Start with identifying main features and noting down key vocabulary and useful language such as linking words- see my four-part method.

4. Compare and contrast the differences- don’t just summarise what you can see, ensure to make note of the differences.

5. Make sure you paraphrase the description given to you.

6. Do not include your opinion.

7. Not all the data can be spoken about- be selective, accurate, and detailed where you can.

8. Time yourself when practicing.
